Tangamandapio está en el valle de Zamora, en el noroccidente de Michoacán, cerca de Tangancícuaro. El nombre es purépecha y se ha traducido como «tronco seco que se mantiene en pie»; en los documentos aparece también como Tanmangandepeo y Tamandapio. El franciscano fray Jacobo Daciano hizo la conversión de sus naturales y fundó el convento de Santiago, su patrono. Fue vicaría de la parroquia de Jacona, y en 1831 quedó como municipio del partido de Zamora.

En lo civil Tangamandapio fue de la jurisdicción de Zamora, dentro de la intendencia de Valladolid. En lo eclesiástico perteneció al Obispado de Michoacán y sus dispensas matrimoniales y capellanías se tramitaron ante la Sagrada Mitra de Valladolid. En 1863 quedó dentro de la nueva Diócesis de Zamora, erigida el 26 de enero de ese año con territorio desmembrado de Michoacán, y allí continúan sus registros posteriores.

Tangamandapio lies in the Zamora valley, in north-western Michoacán, near Tangancícuaro. The name is Purépecha and has been read as "a dry trunk that stays standing"; in the documents it also appears as Tanmangandepeo and Tamandapio. The Franciscan fray Jacobo Daciano carried out the conversion of its people and founded the convent of Santiago, its patron. It was a vicariate of the parish of Jacona, and in 1831 it became a municipality of the partido of Zamora.

Civilly Tangamandapio lay in the jurisdiction of Zamora, within the intendancy of Valladolid. Ecclesiastically it belonged to the Obispado de Michoacán and its marriage dispensations and capellanías were filed with the Sagrada Mitra of Valladolid. In 1863 it fell within the new Diocese of Zamora, erected on 26 January of that year out of territory taken from Michoacán, and its later records continue there.
