Arandas está en los Altos de Jalisco, hacia la raya de Guanajuato, en tierra que fue de chichimecas. La congregación tomó forma en el siglo XVII en torno a las familias fundadoras —los Aranda, Camarena, Hernández—, de donde el nombre; se llamó primero Santa María de Guadalupe de los Aranda.

Como los demás pueblos alteños de este índice, Arandas muestra que las rayas civil y eclesiástica no coincidían. En lo civil fue de la Nueva Galicia, y hoy pertenece a Jalisco; pero sus dispensas matrimoniales se tramitaron ante la Sagrada Mitra de Valladolid, procedentes de los libros del Obispado de Michoacán, que alcanzaba esta orilla de los Altos, por lo que figuran en los rollos que indexa esta página. Arandas lies in the Altos de Jalisco, toward the Guanajuato line, on land that was Chichimec. The congregation took shape in the seventeenth century around the founding families — the Aranda, Camarena, Hernández — whence the name; it was first called Santa María de Guadalupe de los Aranda.

Like the other Altos towns in this index, Arandas shows that the civil and ecclesiastical lines did not coincide. Civilly it lay in Nueva Galicia, and today belongs to Jalisco; but its marriage dispensations were filed with the Sagrada Mitra of Valladolid, from the books of the Obispado de Michoacán, which reached this edge of the Altos, which is why they appear in the films indexed on this page. Anyone hunting an eighteenth-century Arandas family and giving it up for lost in the Guadalajara archives should look on the Valladolid side.
