Neutla está en el oriente de Guanajuato, en el municipio de Comonfort —la antigua Chamacuero—, sobre el río Laja. El nombre es una corrupción del náhuatl «Cuauhnecutla», de «cuahuitl», árbol, «necutli», miel, y «-tla», lugar: «lugar de miel». Se fundó hacia 1536, en la frontera chichimeca, junto a Chamacuero.

En lo civil Neutla dependió de Guanajuato, provincia y desde 1786 intendencia. En lo eclesiástico perteneció al Obispado de Michoacán y sus dispensas matrimoniales y capellanías se tramitaron ante la Sagrada Mitra de Valladolid. Esa dependencia terminó en 1863, cuando la recién erigida Diócesis de León se hizo cargo de las parroquias de Guanajuato; los registros posteriores a esa fecha no se hallan en este acervo, sino en León.

Neutla lies in eastern Guanajuato, in the municipality of Comonfort — the old Chamacuero — on the Río Laja. The name is a corruption of the Náhuatl “Cuauhnecutla,” from “cuahuitl,” tree, “necutli,” honey, and “-tla,” place: “place of honey.” It was founded around 1536, on the Chichimec frontier, beside Chamacuero.

Civilly Neutla depended on Guanajuato, a province and from 1786 an intendancy. Ecclesiastically it belonged to the Obispado de Michoacán and its marriage dispensations and capellanías were filed with the Sagrada Mitra of Valladolid. That dependence ended in 1863, when the newly erected Diocese of León took over the parishes of Guanajuato; records after that date are not found in this collection but in León.
