Parangaricutiro está en la meseta purépecha, al pie del volcán Paricutín, cerca de Uruapan. El nombre es purépecha. En los documentos figura como San Juan Parangaricutiro, por su patrono. El viejo pueblo quedó sepultado por la lava del Paricutín, nacido en 1943, y sus habitantes se trasladaron al sitio que hoy ocupa Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro, adonde llevaron la imagen del Señor de los Milagros.

En lo civil Parangaricutiro estuvo dentro de la provincia y luego intendencia de Valladolid. En lo eclesiástico perteneció al Obispado de Michoacán y sus dispensas matrimoniales y capellanías se tramitaron ante la Sagrada Mitra de Valladolid. En 1863 quedó dentro de la nueva Diócesis de Zamora, erigida el 26 de enero de ese año con territorio desmembrado de Michoacán —Parangaricutiro figura entre sus parroquias fundadoras—, y allí continúan sus registros posteriores.

Parangaricutiro lies on the Purépecha plateau, at the foot of the Paricutín volcano, near Uruapan. The name is Purépecha. In the documents it appears as San Juan Parangaricutiro, after its patron. The old town was buried by the lava of Paricutín, born in 1943, and its people moved to the site now occupied by Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro, where they carried the image of the Señor de los Milagros.

Civilly Parangaricutiro lay within the province and later intendancy of Valladolid. Ecclesiastically it belonged to the Obispado de Michoacán and its marriage dispensations and capellanías were filed with the Sagrada Mitra of Valladolid. In 1863 it fell within the new Diocese of Zamora, erected on 26 January of that year out of territory taken from Michoacán — Parangaricutiro is among its founding parishes — and its later records continue there.
