Contepec está en el nororiente de Michoacán, al pie del cerro de Altamirano, cerca de Maravatío y de la raya del Estado de México. El nombre es náhuatl, «cerro de las ollas» o «en el cerro». Su territorio se repartió entre las encomiendas de Taximaroa y Maravatío; a principios del siglo XVII se congregaron aquí indios otomíes y mazahuas, y los franciscanos fundaron convento hacia 1632. En los documentos figura como Santiago Contepec, por su patrono.

En lo civil Contepec estuvo dentro de la provincia y luego intendencia de Valladolid. En lo eclesiástico perteneció al Obispado de Michoacán y sus dispensas matrimoniales y capellanías se tramitaron ante la Sagrada Mitra de Valladolid. No la tocó la división de 1863, que desprendió las parroquias del occidente para la Diócesis de Zamora: permaneció en Michoacán, hoy Arquidiócesis de Morelia, y allí continúan sus registros posteriores.

Contepec lies in north-eastern Michoacán, at the foot of the Cerro de Altamirano, near Maravatío and the State-of-México line. The name is Náhuatl, “hill of the pots” or “on the hill.” Its territory was split between the encomiendas of Taximaroa and Maravatío; in the early seventeenth century Otomí and Mazahua Indians were congregated here, and the Franciscans founded a convent around 1632. In the documents it appears as Santiago Contepec, after its patron.

Civilly Contepec lay within the province and later intendancy of Valladolid. Ecclesiastically it belonged to the Obispado de Michoacán and its marriage dispensations and capellanías were filed with the Sagrada Mitra of Valladolid. It was not touched by the 1863 division that detached the western parishes for the Diocese of Zamora: it remained in Michoacán, today the Archdiocese of Morelia, and its later records continue there.
