Uriangato está en el sur de Guanajuato, junto a Moroleón, cerca de Yuriria. El nombre es purépecha y se ha traducido como «lugar donde el sol se pone en lo alto». La congregación de indios se formó en 1549 por el agustino fray Diego de Chávez y Alvarado —el mismo de Yuriria—, y el 20 de febrero de 1604, por orden de Felipe III, quedó erigida como San Miguel Uriangato, su patrono.

En lo civil Uriangato dependió de Guanajuato, provincia y desde 1786 intendencia. En lo eclesiástico perteneció al Obispado de Michoacán y sus dispensas matrimoniales y capellanías se tramitaron ante la Sagrada Mitra de Valladolid. Esa dependencia terminó en 1863, cuando la recién erigida Diócesis de León se hizo cargo de las parroquias de Guanajuato; los registros posteriores a esa fecha no se hallan en este acervo, sino en León.

Uriangato lies in southern Guanajuato, beside Moroleón, near Yuriria. The name is Purépecha and has been read as “place where the sun sets on high.” The Indian congregation was formed in 1549 by the Augustinian fray Diego de Chávez y Alvarado — the same of Yuriria — and on 20 February 1604, by order of Philip III, it was erected as San Miguel Uriangato, its patron.

Civilly Uriangato depended on Guanajuato, a province and from 1786 an intendancy. Ecclesiastically it belonged to the Obispado de Michoacán and its marriage dispensations and capellanías were filed with the Sagrada Mitra of Valladolid. That dependence ended in 1863, when the newly erected Diocese of León took over the parishes of Guanajuato; records after that date are not found in this collection but in León.
